  • I'm considering buying an MTB on cyclescheme at work.

I used to ride DH and DJ when I was younger, but all I don't really want to get back into all that. I just want something I can do a bit of everything on - probably nothing too gnarly, just single track/Swinley/ South Downs and I might leave it in Wales.

Tossing up whether I buy a steel hard tail or a bouncy bike. I don't want to drop a load of money on top of the 1k so I was erring more towards the HT with a decent spec, maybe with plus wheels in fashionable 650b. I liked the look of the Genesis Tarn.

    Looking for advice/opinions.

  • bump

  • You'll need suspension with all those bumps.

  • Santa Cruz V10 CC

  • I dunno much about the current crop of MTBs. But the obvious point to make is that MTBs are more expensive than road bikes owing to the higher cost of the components i.e. mostly due to the suspension forks, and also the disc brakes (albeit to a much lesser degree). So budget will need careful consideration.

The Tarn looks decent. You'll probably find quite a few bikes like that as the steel hardtail is obviously a bit of a classic. Fans of that style used to populate forums like Singletrack (if that's still going). The other option might be to look at the 'mass-produced' stuff from the likes of Cube, Canyon, etc., although I guess design-wise they won't be your thing...

  • Mass produced aluminium is the only sensible choice for an MTB circa £1k

  • I would go for the Norco Fluid 7.2 HT if it was my money. Don't get a full sus for £1000

  • I could probably afford to chuck in another few hundred quid on top for the right bike

  • Edit - that actually looks quite nice, well reviewed.... and seemingly unavailable everywhere :(

  • always wanted a v10 or a Yeti DH bike.

  • Whyte 901
    Kona Honzo
    Canyon Sender...?

  • If it were me, I'd be going for a Specialized Epic HT

  • Or the 2018 Chisel.

  • Chisel looks good, but a bit too race orientated geo and 100mm of travel probably isn't going to be enough for getting rad2thamax occasionally

  • Was going to suggest a Santa Cruz heckler but you wont get a new one for the budget...

  • The last Santa Cruz I had was a Super 8

  • Didn't you have a intense m1 at some point?

  • Still have it. It's the last one I raced

  • I like the idea of a Santa Cruz chameleon - bit out of budget though

  • M1's were absolute beasts (and SUPER ugly)!

I think the best mtb I ever owned was a Specialized Demo. So fast.

  • I don't know why but I still look out for a GT LTS DH, my own 16yr old dream. I think if I had an intense M1 I would an absolute melt down with joy. Fucking cool ugly bike.

Swinley and peaslake have loads of demo days that might be worth a look?

I hired a whyte 901 and it's got really great geo nice and long front end with quite a short rear. Smooth bike.
