It's very do-able by train and would a great journey. But I can't really justify the time away and the travel cost, especially as we're planning on moving house in the next six months. I'll need to save my passes and cash for a trip a bit closer to home

If you want a cheaper all round winter steel hack then you could get something like a Genesis frameset.
