  • If you use TR it doesn't matter if you get your FTP right first time because when you set a new record it updates your FTP for the next session, it will do this every session until you settle at the correct number. But, you need an Erg trainer.

  • If you're in a block they are 8 weeks long and an FTP test is on sessions 1 of weeks 1 and 5

  • This is also my plan - do three turbos a week and then supplement with two outside rides. The TIK was good while it lasted and then yeah the club run or longer weekend ride.... I think thats surely plenty for us mere mortals

  • Why won't it work on rollers? Because you have to control the resistance?

  • ERG isn't great on a fluid turbo, as at the beginning of each interval the fluid is cooler so harder to work through, then as it heats up the resistance gets easier.

    But for a direct drive, yes, absolutely spot on.

  • If in the real outside world I ride up Beddlestead in 8.22 at an average of 275 watts that would translate to an ftp of approx 250 right assuming I gave it all the beans? Minus 10% on 8 min power?

    I just tested on TR and I was down a bit on this figure tonight

    I guess that difference is the joy of freedom and the motivation of trying to stay with club mates

  • I think it's a well established fact that FTP figures are generally lower on turbo trainers compared to outdoors. There is also a knack to doing tests that you'll not get right first time.

  • Don't you have to do the 8 minutes twice in an FTP test? Would you be able to ride back down Beddlestead and back up again with the same power?

  • That is a very good point - probably not quite as I was pretty fooked. I have also read it shouldnt be done on a hill

  • Do my segment (linked somewhere back up the thread). Goes up Polhill and designed for continuous effort. It can go to over 20 minutes if you want.

  • It can be done on a steady gadient surely?

    He was over earlier in the summer working with Arrocoach with a view to making the NZ cycling squad, went back to NZ but is now back in the UK for a crack at the 25 mile TT National record this Sunday.

  • For what duration?

    Because that's key. The accepted* level of a GT winning rider is being able to put out 6 w/kg for 30 minutes or more. I'd have thought Cavendish can put out more than 15 w/kg but for less than 30 seconds.

    * not sure it is accepted by all. Some riders have put out more than that but they were doped to the gills.

  • I dunno Andy. I would guess if it's Hamish, at least as long as he can ride a 25 for?
