  • Getting gridded helps enormously. But to get gridded, you've got to consistently get good results, so it's a vicious circle.

There are a few tricks to help, but the main one is to be assertive and make sure you're in the first row behind the gridded riders.

  • Aha.. I thought the timing / lap counter wouldn't start til you crossed the line.

I was pretty near the back, didn't get gridded obvs.
Passed a fair few people on first lap, by god there was some very optimistic inside lines being fought for.

  • Talkin of optimistic lines:

    Senior/Junior men

  • Wolverine

  • Is the concentration or fear I see in those eyes?

  • There are a few tricks to help

Such as "do you know who I am? I'm a team mate of AndyP."

  • I'm pretty sure Andy has "had a word" with someone in one race. I can't remember which one.

I'd only undo all the good work but cornering like that Wiggins clip, and nervously picking my way around.

Without sounding like the Aesop's fable fox: I quite enjoy starting where I start and having the race I have, I like the challenge of seeing how far up I can get.

I totally get that. I did an Eastern League race once, near Thurrock, where everyone gets gridded. Having not ridden one before, I was on the last row of the grid, along with Andy Snowball from VCL, and it was great fun. I reckon we made up 30 places in the first lap alone, it was like Super Mario Kart.

  • Or Arton Senna in the 1993 European Grand Prix at Donnington.

  • see where i am!!!?

  • So far back I thought I'd missed you when John scanned to the right. You pootled past too - at that point you should be sprinting to gain positions!

At your next race (and god knows when that will be as the next two rounds are all but impossible to get to due to train engineering works) we must work on getting you further forward.

  • Was the guy on the Open Up the brother of someone who works at Cycle Fit?

  • I think so. Jimmy, who works at Cyclefit, is a friend of mine. I'll ask him when I see him next.

  • There really wasn't the space to sprint into, narrow, etc. etc.
    Confidence.

Also: were there 2 open ups? 1 in our race, 1 in the seniors?

  • Yeah, must have been him then. Was in Cycle Fit just now, and on seeing their Open Ups (they have an orange and a brown), I mentioned that someone on an Open Up had been doing some overtaking at a cross race. He thought it might be the other fitter's (presumably Jimmy) brother.

  • Cross Vegas tomorrow @ 5:30am

  • Well done chaps, very impressive all round from the seasoned 'semi pros' to the beginners. nice one.

  • I think you mean tomorrow. :)

  • Yes.
